2005.1 Game Messageboard

253End Game has been called (see message below). I'm guessing Rob turned it on as there were few pawns and lots of cash, and some filthy individuals have threatened to kill all reamaining pawns in games, causing a draw (not that I would condone such activity).

When End Game is called anyone with no pawns at midnight loses all their money. Should have put it in an alliance (this was the original reason that alliances with 1 person were blocked from withdrawing cash, as some dirty players would use them to amass an untouchable block of cash for an endgame massacre).

252Hi guys, one piece of question... As you all know I am out of the game, but I cannot understand why after I lost my last pawn on the top of loosing 1/2 of the money, at midnight I have lost the remaining 1/2.... :(
Maybe I didn't read the Faq properly, or is it a bug? Thanks for the answers!

196I've had a thought while giving Rob an update of my thoughts on the game...

I'm assuming everyone knows that Evil Matt Warriner (playing as Roland) and Byrnie (playing as Simon) are basically a single operational unit. I'm pretty certain they are both in the Assorted alliance at the moment, and have a third player out as a mole in either Da Boys or Really Nasty Blokes (which is what they did last game under the name of Cloud). However, if you are dealing with one of these 2 players you need to know that all your information and money is effectively being run by the Assorted alliance.

Friendly warning...hugs and kisses

189Right, I've got a shit-ton of cash and 4 pawns, and by my reckoning there are 3 people out there who own about 40% of the pawns (ie, they've got about 6-7 each). If I start the killing they will only come back into the sale, and they'll be able to outbid everyone, so people are going to need to vote endgame soon...

Don't start any attrition wars until no more pawns will be made available...otherwise you

We asked 100 operatives how much they would charge to kill YOUR pawns. Then we lost the results, and some of the money...so went went back and asked 1 operative what he reckoned the chances of killing YOUR pawn was if we gave him 500 hard-earned resources. Heres what he said....

George Green----------------------20
Ian Stewart-----------------------22
Thomas Muir-----------------------23
Michael Francis Atiyah------------25
William Emerson-------------------25

Harvey Milk-----------------------41
Marcel Proust---------------------44
Henry David Thoreau---------------44
Michelangelo--------New-----------44

So what we can surmise from this is that there are an awful lot of pawns out there currently "at leisure"...Andy Warhol and below basically. There are 3 pawns who look to be taking on "Super Pawn" status in George Green, Ian Stewart and Thomas Muir...it they aren't already they soon will be earning their owner (or owners) a large amount of expensive-to-kill cash. Not that I'm recommending you kill them when I turn out the lights. There are a number of pawns playing a midfield game, and combining this with the relative availability of the operatives and high number of suicides I reckon that some people haven't been doing the 3-2 stabilization plan...naughty naughty.

An idea occurred to me after my weekly Icar session. Why not meet up in town for a fews beers after the game has finished? We can get the London crew in for a beer or 12. It's been a while since we've got them up to Reading for some time. Although this is available to everyone, I will understand if some of you don't fly in from Italy/Texas/Whatever planet Pete is on. 175I have been through the stats and system and the reason penrose died is because his hobby happiness fell below zero. This was caused by two disruptions and then when you moved him, that finished him off. When you move a pawn, it makes him less happy, as it says in Pete's wonderful player FAQ. He wasn't wonderfully upset before but moving him put him over the edge. You killed him by evicting him!

137It's a regular complaint that a lot of 99% jobs fail. This is purely unlucky. Each job has a 1/100 chance of failing, which is actually quite high. To prove that there is nothing wrong with it, here is the bit of code that checks to see if the job is successful.
(@jobtobedone[7] is the percentage)

$chanceofpass = @jobtobedone[7] / 100;
if ($debug == 1) {print "
  • Chance of pass: $chanceofpass
    ";}

    $randomnumber = rand();

    if ($debug == 1) {print "
  • Random Number: $randomnumber
    ";}

    if ($randomnumber < $chanceofpass) {
    if ($debug == 1) {print "
  • Job will occur
    ";}

    [snip]

    As you can see, there is no smoke and mirrors involved here. You're just unlucky.

    113Jimmy, thanks for the post not only detailling the problem but the solution! If only all the problems I was faced with were provided with solutions.

    However, the other Anonymous poster is correct, this is the last game of Chom 2 and so I am not changing any perl files unless there is a major problem. This is not a major problem.

    At no point did Chom 2 ever support anything but IE so you use your other browsers at your own risk. This is unlikely to be the case in future versions because I will be moving to XHTML, a better standard.

    Many thanks,

    110Dear Chom,

    I have a simple request relating to your HTML output. Not being a fan of the IE browser (and I'm sure you'll understand why) I am playing this game with FireFox. And very nice it is, too. Sadly, all the tooltips (e.g. "Send anonymously") have stopped working (but are perfectly OK in IE). These tooltips are actually quite useful, and I'd appreciate it if they could be made to work. Having searched the web for the reason why, I have unearthed the following information:

    The ALT tag for images is NOT supposed to produce a little tooltip when you mouseover an image, according to the HTML spec. This is supposed to be the job of the TITLE tag. [...] IE has always done it for the ALT tag too.

    Full posting here: http://www.gadgetopia.com/2004/11/09/FirefoxALTTagsAndTooltips.html

    Now, having examined your HTML, I see that the tooltips are in fact recorded in the "ALT" tag. Could you alter this to the "TITLE" tag, so that standards-compliant browsers can enjoy this game to the full too, please?

    With apologies for being such a pedant,

    Jimmy

    103It takes time... happiness levels control which direction and how much the pawn's happiness changes at midnight, so if you've raised its levels to or just above those required for happiness it will be getting happier, but very slowly. If you max it out it will improve faster, but will cost more and may become a target...

    96I should just clarify...neither Byrnie or myself have used anything other than basic HTML on our messages...no brute force password attacks as this was agreed long ago as "not on". The HTML used was not complex, it was mainly cut'n'paste from the existing board, just correctly re-ordered.

    If we'd wanted to we could have pulled the entire system apart by now (not belittling Robs coding skill, more emphasising our own persistance and sadness), and trust me when I said we had some really evil tricks we could have done, however we stuck within the safe scope of HTML manipulation (and we made sure we did it properly...).

    93Right! Have fixed vunerabilities in the mail and glyph system. HTML will now be stripped from it.

    In future, if you find a vunerability, check with me before you exploit it. You're supposed to win by playing the game, not hacking it.

    There are some emergent properties of the game that may be exploited, if you're clever enough (for example Pete's excellent collection of stats using job costs). Check with me first.
    Sent by Rob Lang at 18.2.5 on 11:25
    92RIGHT! I'm not spending any more time fixing the board. If you screw the board up while playing with html, then I will not fix it but instead screw with your player account. I will kill pawns, take resources and publicly expose information.

    Also, stop trying to log in as me. You won't figure out my login combination because I used random numbers and letters to create it.

    If you know what you're doing, not going to screw it up and are doing it for game reasons then you may continue but be warned, I will strike by posting vital information to the board. Like this:

    The last person to screw up the board (and try to log in as me) was Darren Goodger, who is playing Rainbow Butt Monkey, has one pawn, 113 resources, is the 6th most active player with 251 actions, has sent 12 mail messages and has done 6 'good' jobs and one bad.

    See what a pain in the arse I can be? I get worse. Don't make me strip out all the html from your messages. I have the code ready, I'm just allowing you to write html to inline pictures and format text.

    85We've previously had using Alliances as 1-man banks (now blocked) and a variety of misinformation tricks on the boards (though no-ones managed to fully fake a message yet, as seen by mine and byrnies earlier muck-ups...).

    You can do some silly stuff with avatars if you give it a bit of lateral thought, though you should be careful not to trash the overall HTML of the pages.

    As far as player tricks Fish owns there, by convincing Gareth to publish his own pawn list. Last game someone (we know who) decided to hand over a password for a rather large alliance, thus handing victory to a small group of players...I think my best stunt was convincing most people I had no pawns, while slowly accumulating money in a (now blocked) 1-person alliance...

    Other instant effect jobs are like Disruption. (Steal is a bit different, as there is an extra layer on jobs...a job affects the wealth level, and the wealth level affects money happiness).

    64Thats actually a pretty complex question to answer...

    Your pawn has 3 happiness levels (and an overall average). Taking "Love" happiness as an example;

    The value of Love happiness ranges from 0-200 (high being good)...this is then broken down into 9 arbitary levels that define which little image they get. Every night at midnight the Love happiness is affected positively or negatively by the current status of the relationship...on the Chom viewer (triangle Icon) you can see the "minimum level for happiness"...this relates to a midnight adjuster of zero (so Love happiness will neither go up or down)...you will only see a change when a happiness level goes outside the current arbitary realm...the better the relationship the bigger the affector, and teh faster you will see the change...

    Simple...

    Back to the (very poorly defined) drawing board...I'd like to add I'm coming up with all this in the middle of a training course, with encroaching jetlag...its not easy being a devious cunt you know...

    30Every time you post a message, the number goes up.

    Pete forged a message row, using html (probably modifying the source from his previous post, #18). The row above the fake is the real message number, he added a new row in after it with a fake message number and message. Unfortunately he left the old message number in there, which didn't match.

    Even if he had put the right number in, the real message row would have had the same number.

    Also, he didn't include the glyph, which is included in all non-anonymous messages, as in Rainbow Butt Monkey's message (#4) and Simon's message (#26)

    Not sure that's very clear. hmm.

    Nice try though Pete :D haven't seen message board fakery for a while...

    24D'oh! I got the timing of the disruption wrong! There were bids for that bugger, so I thought it would be good if he died as soon as somebody bought him. But, no, I fucked -up and now nobody has to pay for him. Not even a mention on the news-page for my money! Damn! damn! damn! PS- Remember that "Generous" allocation of resources last night? I got 4. Big fucking deal.

    23For the people who have a better experience at this game:
    How long before everyone will be assigned a pawn?
    If there is a special strategy in play, since it seems that someone had done it before, do you think that bidding more than 400 is a good way to start getting some paens to play with? can this potentially block the strategy?
    Sent by Anonymous at 15.2.5 on 12:36
    22Byrn

    Its theoretically possilbe for a single player to put down a bid for over 400 at the mo as we were all given resources last night...however I do suspect that there is a non-alliance tem in operation blocking pawn bids as I initially suggested...and as I said its an unbeatable strategy if left unchecked...

    21I have no idea why I started the game with no pawns in play. No idea. Seemed like a good idea.

    Thanks for the heads up on the incorrect link, Byrn. Fixed now.

    I have changed a few other game parameters but you're just going to have to see what they are by watching it do its magic.

    All the Noobs that I have spoken to recently HAVE read the players guide and are playing by the rules. It seems that there are some new tactics in play!

    19Definately the latter mate... this morning someone put in bids on all the new pawns from 100 to 432.

    As well as the (excellent) new player guide, there's also a tutorial. you really need to read these before playing. That's why they were linked from the chom announcement mail.

    If you have any questions, try the guides, and iff they don't explain it go to the help forum and ask..

    (By the way Rob, the help forum icon gives a 'forum not found' error)

    There are players out there who are happy to answer your questions.

    18I'll try and be a little more helpful...

    There is a players guide...I wrote it and it covers all the basics you need to know, like NOT WASTING YOUR MONEY ON JOBS BEFORE YOU HAVE A PAWN. I recommend you read it. Really.

    Secondly...either people are over-bidding on pawns, or someone (actually 2 or more) are using a strategy I came up with a while ago, where a small gorup of players can effectively block anyone else from buying pawns by overbidding on them, and then removing the money to a safe place for the bid failure...I would say that the startnig volume of pawns was too low fo rthe number of players, which is exasperating the situation a bit. Its a shame Rob didn't start us all off with a pawn as he has done previously, especially if we have a lot of new players (at least one of two of these are probably already out from job spending...)

    Thirdly...I'll happily consider a decent alliance...emails to the.real.pete@itsjustyou.com . I'm not quite ready to reveal the real Pete just yet...

    15There's a sort of grim determination to lose - even before the game has properly started. Is anyone else having trouble getting a reasonable bid on a pawn?
    Sent by Anonymous at 15.2.5 on 10:48
    14It's best just to look at it as being doomed. Utterly doomed.

    5For those that don't know, Pete is perhaps the most prolific of all players. He was the one I first sounded out when designing Chom 1, was there right at the start of Chom 1 where he won the first ever game, wrote the fantastic players guide, assisted Chris Simpson in a win of 2002.2 and is now probably plotting with a sizable team. Pete also manages to collate huge amounts of information on people given very little and is a one-man statistical generator!

    1It'd just like to say that the number of Peter Gandertons there are has nothing to do with me. If everyone wants to be called Peter Ganderton, then that's up to them. I don't understand the fetish myself but then it takes all sorts - especially in this game.
